Biography:

Samuel Hartman (he/him) is a master's student in the Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies department at Penn State and is pursuing a graduate minor in Jewish Studies. In 2019, he completed dual B.A. degrees in Jewish Studies, and Classics and Ancient Mediterranean's Studies with a focus in ancient languages at Penn State University. Additionally, he completed a minor in Greek, Religious Studies, and Astronomy and Planetary Science. His broad areas of interest include the formation, development, transmission and innovation of texts during the Second Temple Period and within Early Christianity. More specifically, his research interests focus on the socio-historical strata embedded within these texts, and their reflection on the complex nature of defining normative Yahwism and Judaism in light of communities such as the early Elephantine community and later Qumran community. Of personal interest, is the development of ancient astronomical thought and practice in places such as Ugarit, Israel, Judah and the later community at Qumran.
