Formal courses given infrequently to explore, in depth, a comparatively narrow subject that may be topical or of special interest.
Special topic for Fall 2026: Greece, Rome, and Africa
This course surveys the history of interactions between ancient Greeks and Romans on the one hand, and Egyptians, Nubians, Ethiopians, Carthaginians, and other African populations on the other. Students enrolled in this course will get first preference to join an embedded trip to Tunisia to see the ruins of Carthage and learn about the region’s long history of cross-cultural interaction. Those who wish to join the optional trip must also enrol in CAMS/AFR/JST 199 or 499.
