CAMS Alums Jennifer Hendrickson Walsh ‘07 and Matthew Howland ‘12 received Alumni Honoree Awards from the Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies.

Jennifer Hendrickson Walsh, recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award, earned a bachelor of arts in classics and ancient Mediterranean studies and a bachelor of arts in international politics from Penn State in 2007, is senior director of emergency preparedness and continuity for Mass General Brigham. She brings nearly twenty years of experience developing and implementing strategies to address complex challenges in emergency preparedness, security, and continuity across critical infrastructure sectors. Her background spans emergency management and risk management in federal, state, and private sector contexts, encompassing strategic planning, mitigation analysis, and continuity of operations. She currently oversees an enterprise emergency preparedness and continuity team with a focus on healthcare operations.

Matthew Howland, recipient of the Outstanding Early Career Achievement, earned a bachelor of arts in classics and ancient Mediterranean studies and a bachelor of science in archaeological science from Penn State in 2012, is an anthropological archaeologist and director of the Geospatial Archaeology Laboratory at Wichita State University. He holds a PhD and master of arts in anthropology from the University of California San Diego. His research centers on the application of GIS and 3D spatial methods to the study of archaeological sites in the Southern Levant, Kansas, and Georgia, as well as 3D and spatial storytelling platforms for multilingual community-engaged digital public archaeology. His work has appeared in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, PLOS One, Journal of Archaeological Science, and Advances in Archaeological Practice and has been covered by CNN, Vice, and Newsweek.
